Age-Related
Macular
Degeneration

The macular is the central part of the retina, this lines the inside of the eye and acts like the film in a camera. It is highly sensitive and provides the eye with its detailed vision.
The cells of the macula are very delicate. As the eye ages the cells become worn out and the vision begins to deteriorate. Since the changes are generally age-related, both eyes are normally affected. Occasionally the changes at the macular may be caused by leaking blood vessels.
Macular degeneration is not painful and never leads to total blindness. Even though you may lose your central vision, the peripheral should remain in tact.
If the degeneration is caused by leaking blood vessels, this can be treated reasonably well using laser surgery. The laser is used to seal the leaking vessels. If the degeneration is caused through normal wear and tear, then unfortunately there is no treatment available.
