A cataract is when the lens within the eye becomes cloudy. Despite what people may say, it is not a skin that grows over your eye. Your vision will become blurred because light cannot pass through the lens to the back of your eye. The lens sits just behind the iris (the coloured part of your eye). A cataract can occur for several reasons, the most common of which is age. However, no matter what the cause, the treament is the same. Cataracts are removed by surgery. The old, cloudy lens is removed, and a new, clear plastic lens is put in its place. The procedure is normally done under local anaesthetic, and generally takes about 45 minutes. Cataract operations are very common and very successful. |
